More than half of lakes and reservoirs on Earth threatened ecological catastrophe. But the world pays little attention. This will be examined at the International conference on monitoring ecological status of lakes.
The Commission of experts at a conference in Japan stated that lakes are polluted with agricultural fertilizers, waste industry and human activity, and increasing demand for water contributes to the drying up of lakes.
Some lakes are already in a catastrophic state. For example, the Aral Sea located in Central Asia between Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. After the direction of rivers flowing into it was changed to 60 years for agricultural purposes, the lake area has decreased in two times.
Experts say that other large lakes are under threat of destruction. This is lake Victoria in Africa, lake Okeechobee in Florida and lake Baikal in Russia.
Lake in the UK, for example, suffer from congestion caused by tourism, while risk and ecological systems. Although lakes in industrialized and developing countries are in danger, only rich countries can find the resources to save them. This is the opinion of experts.
